The Ontario Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit (OIDMTC) is not adapted to remote work. So much so that our provincial and federal governments had to make an exception to allow it during the pandemic.

Our governments are well aware of this issue since it has been raised by IO, industry, and stakeholders on many occasions. They also understand that remote work is here to stay in all sectors of the economy.

As stated in IO’s letter to Minister Bethlenfalvy (Finance) and Minister MacLeod (Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries), it is now time to make sure that the eligibility of remote work is permanently integrated into the OIDMTC for companies operating in Ontario and employing Ontario residents.

IO was pleased to receive a response from Minister Bethlenfalvy to let us know that they are taking our comments into consideration. Minister Bethlenfalvy (and Minister MacLeod who was cced) also expressed the Province’s support for our industry, and mentioned that our Roadmap to Economic Success will help them continue to explore opportunities to attract additional investment and create even more jobs in Ontario.

We have the potential in Ontario to reach at least 40% of the jobs in the video game and interactive digital media sector in Canada, which represents our share of the population (we’re currently at about 20%). Let’s seize the tremendous opportunity we have to grow the video game and IDM sector in the province, and contribute to the prosperity of Ontario’s digital economy with the techno-creative jobs we create.” Lucie Lalumière, President & CEO, Interactive Ontario
