Taking part in the debate was: Mark Bishop Partner/Producer marblemedia, Trevor Fencott, Managing Partner and CEO of Bedlam Games, Jody Shapiro, Filmmaker/Photographer, Everyday Pictures and the session was moderated by Charles Zamaria, Professor Ryerson. Key points from the discussion were:
- Canada produces some of the top interactive media content in the world
- Producers of interactive media content and services, both cultural and commercial, are ultimately businesses that require investment and that must cater to domestic and international markets
- Interactive industries create highly-skilled, well-paying jobs for Canadians and generate significant revenues for Canada
- Markets for interactive content are outpacing most other sectors of the economy. The $14 million Canada New Media Fund has helped emerging companies leverage other investments to compete globally, however an injection of more funds could result in exponential growth.
Remember to keep these issues in mind with the upcoming election. Ask your candidates these tough questions and cast your vote for culture and digital media in Canada.
Special thanks to our sponsors: the OMDC, KPMG and GCI Canada, and to all those who attended. Stay tuned for details of our next session, coming soon.
