Atlantic Film Festival
The fourth major film festival in Canada is the international Atlantic Film Festival, held every September in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Strong East Coast roots support a unique format for AFF with its distinctive focus on film and music. Large enough to attract the world’s most notable actors, directors and producers, but intimate enough to be Canada’s kitchen party Festival, the AFF provides an unpretentious atmosphere for watching some of the best international, Canadian and Atlantic Canadian films, with opportunities to hear some of the best artists the region offers.
In addition to screening films from around the world and across Canada, and providing a platform for showcasing the finest Atlantic Canadian films, AFF programmers scour the world for unique films for an AFF audience. Whether it’s inspiring documentaries, offbeat film noir, the latest Hollywood has to offer or beautifully crafted animation, there will be a favourite film for everyone.
Inspired Script is a competitive opportunity for Atlantic Canadian writers to submit, develop and pitch script ideas to potential producers, with the winner receiving funding to turn their idea into a film. Our Inspired Doc program screens the best documentary films and invites these filmmakers to attend the screenings for a facilitated Q&A session with the audience, offering an exciting insight into their vision and approach to these films.
Inspired Music is a program of music films, master classes, panels, keynotes, and innovative projects like 10 X 10 where 10 filmmakers pair up with 10 artists to create 10 music videos in a four-day period. The AFF’s music program also encompasses Music & Image, a partnership between the AFFA and the East Coast Music Association. M&I is dedicated to the professional development and promotion of East Coast music, and designed to bridge the gap between music and film through professional development sessions, one-on-one meetings between artists and music supervisors and exciting showcase performances. Music & Image is active throughout the year, both in Canada and the United States, attending events and monitoring industry activity.
